Processed food is the opposite of healthy…
Producing processed food is bad for the planet. Heavy machinery, chemically altered ingredients, single-use disposable packaging, and transportation across the globe… Plus it makes us sick when we eat it.
And yet in most parts of the United States processed food is the most easily available thing to eat for anyone who’s hungry for a meal.
Plant-based, nutrient dense food (in the form of fresh produce) is the healthiest thing humans can eat.
The fresher the better.
(That’s why farmer’s markets have become so popular.)
But even when we shop at farmer’s markets, by the time food gets to our plate it is usually a few days old. Produce purchased at the grocery store can be weeks old before we eat it. Not only does this deplete the nutritional value of the food we eat, but oftentimes (due to how long it takes to get from farm to table) produce can spoil before we ever get to eat it.
Nothing beats the healthfulness of eating straight from the garden.
The only problem is that gardening is hard and time-consuming and most people don’t know how to do it.
With a GrowBot anyone can eat garden-fresh without having to take the time or effort to learn how to care for the plants enough to make food grow.
Protecting life on this planet requires rethinking how we feed ourselves in society.
Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides used for conventional growing are detrimental to our health as well as to the health of the farmers, to the health of the land and soil, and to the health of our oceans and water bodies.
Conventional farming relies on massive amounts of fuel and dirty energy to run the tractors and the machinery and the trucks and trains and planes for transporting food to grocery stores.
GrowBots can grow all the same food with no chemicals and no fuel inputs.
Plus growing food at home reduces the need for carbon waste from driving to and from the store, and it also reduces the need for packaging.
Many hydroponics growers claim that hydroponics is a viable solution to these issues, but not all hydroponics technologies are created equally…
Traditional hydroponics technology is run by electricity, most of which we currently power with dirty fuels that burn and emit greenhouse gasses.
Traditional hydroponics requires water to be dumped every 14 days. The water that gets dumped out of traditional hydroponics systems are laden with nutrients, and they pollute the water systems they are dumped into.
The GrowBot’s newly patented hydroponics technology is the most environmental and sustainable hydroponics technology in the world.
The GrowBot are solar powered, requiring no energy inputs from dirty fuels. And the GrowBot allows for water to stay in the system, with no dumping.
Growing food with a GrowBot reduces water waste, carbon and greenhouse gas waste, chemical waste and plastic packaging waste!
Each of us are safer when we have our own supply of food that we can grow, without relying on a global system running on forces outside our control. We are collectively safer when more food is growing in more places.
During World War II the United States government called upon its citizens to plant gardens to help bolster the national food supply. They were called “Victory Gardens”.
Having individuals growing food in their own homes allowed for more of farmed crops to be sent to troops.
These gardens were also a kind of insurance, because they would have been sources of life-saving calories in the event of shortages or supply chain disruptions.
When the Covid19 pandemic struck more people planted gardens than ever before…
But most people have no idea how to grow enough food to make a real difference in their diets.
And most people lack the time it takes to water and weed and properly tend to a garden.
GrowBots can grow the same amount of food 30% faster in ⅕ the amount of land.
Having more GrowBots in more households will make everyone more food secure.
Processed food is bad for people and the planet (and all the organisms that inhabit our planet.)
Junk food might be cheap to buy in stores, but it’s expensive to people’s lives when their unhealthy diet leads to disease and discomfort. And it’s expensive to the healthcare system.
Junk food is also expensive to the ecosystems that are destroyed by growing and manufacturing the ingredients.
We are sick of watching companies make profits by polluting and destroying ecosystems in order to create products that poison and sicken the people they sell it to.
It’s unfair that healthy food (fresh produce) is more expensive than processed junk food in the United States.
Lack of access to healthy food has far-reaching consequences.
We have a solution!
As our company scales up production of our garden-growing robots we will be able to drop our prices lower and lower. Our goal over the next ten years is to be able to sell $50 GrowBots with the same growing capacity as the model we sell today. These $50 GrowBots will revolutionize the way everyone feeds themselves, providing even the lowest-income households with diets of nutrient-dense, pesticide free fresh leafy greens and vegetables that at today’s market prices, only the wealthiest households can afford to feed themselves…
When society’s poorest families can automatically grow their own garden-fresh nutrition, the impact is better diets that lead to better health for all.
Billions of years worth of evolution have resulted in organisms that possess genius solutions for thriving in their environments, using available resources to sustain life, without waste.
Human design is sloppier. Compared to billions of years of evolution, human industry has only existed for a few thousand years.
That’s why some of the best design principles come from imitating nature’s solutions, instead of inventing new ones.
GrowBot’s patented technology was designed in many ways to mimic nature, enabling energy saving, maximized use of available resources and better growth and health for the plants in the growing system.
Mother nature knows best!
This is bad for the environment, but good for company profits (because companies profit from the consumers’ need for a new device when the ones they buy stop working.)
At our company we strongly oppose this practice.
We strongly believe that consumers should have the right to repair their electronic devices, instead of throwing them away and buying new ones.
We build GrowBots to last a lifetime.
Our machines are repairable. They can be repaired with simple tools that most everyone has.
The maximum price for any of our parts is $50 (in 2020 dollars) and you only need to buy one if it’s beyond the 5-year warranty. If it’s within the 5-year warranty we replace it for you. (You just cover shipping.) This right to repair is important to us – it’s embedded in our mission – our purpose and intention is to be environmental stewards.
GrowBots are built to grow food indefinitely, over multiple generations of your family. That is our intention. That’s what we built it for.
We don’t want anyone throwing away this machine EVER. We are committed to taking back any unused machines, wherever they are, and finding them new homes in families that want to grow food.
GrowBot inventor James Brake had a problem…
He found himself overworked, overweight and unhealthy.
When he woke up one day and couldn’t see his toes when he looked down, he realized he desperately needed a change in diet and lifestyle…
After consulting with medical and health experts, James decided to switch to a vegan diet.
And this turned out to be the right move. The diet saved his health!
But over time, the tremendous expense of eating healthy started to put a big strain on James’ ability to support his family…
In order to get healthy food in a less expensive way, James started gardening… Living in Hawaii it’s easy to grow 365-days a year there.
It took a lot of time and labor to dig and weed and plant the garden, but it was a great way for James to eat healthy without breaking the bank…
But that only lasted until one day the family went on a 10-day vacation…
By the time they came home, the garden was overgrown with weeds, and it went from being a source of inexpensive food to being a source of frustration and heartache.
But given James’ extensive background in robotics and machine learning and programming, he decided to use his expertise to solve the problem of expensive healthy food by building a robot to do the gardening work. James wanted a robot to the work, so his garden could grow and thrive, even if he wasn’t there to care for it…
James decided that his automated garden should be hydroponic, because food in hydroponics systems grows 30% faster and uses 1/5th the space, 70% less chemical inputs and 90% less water than backyard gardening in dirt.
But when James started building hydroponics systems based on the latest hydroponics technology, he was frustrated to learn that there were a lot of drawbacks…
Because it turns out that these systems are complicated to get right…
For starters, the water in traditional hydroponics systems requires frequent monitoring. Users have to continually check the Ph levels to make sure they stay in balance because when the water is too alkaline or too acidic, the plants could die.
Also the pipes are thin and easily clogged up by roots from the plants. Users have to continually clear out clogs, because if the water flow gets blocked, the plants could die.
Another issue with traditional hydroponics growing is that the water has to be dumped from the system every two weeks. Despite that water waste, hydroponics still uses 90% less water than traditional farming, but dumping fertilizer water into the environment is still toxic and, therefore, highly problematic.
Something else that frustrated James about traditional hydroponics growing is that these systems can only grow certain kinds of plants… They are great for growing leafy greens and tomatoes, but given the small growing spaces, root vegetables and other large plants (like pumpkins and melons) are not viable in traditional hydroponics systems.
James wanted to automate the system, which meant he had to find a solution to the Ph levels and the root clogging. Plus he wanted the system to be more environmentally sustainable, with no water dumping and with no reliance on greenhouse gas emitting energy. He also wanted to be able to grow a wider variety of crops…
Over the years he designed a hydroponics system that never requires the water to be tested or dumped, that delivers automatic watering, automatic feeding, allows for basically any crop to be grown, and all of which is run on solar power and grown in perlite (puffed sand), so that any weeds that enter the system can be pulled out lightly, without any force.
When James’ friends and neighbors saw what he had built (and the fact that it more than paid for itself by saving money that would have been spent at the grocery store) everyone started asking James to build a GrowBot for them too.
Nearly a decade later, GrowBots are now providing busy families with effortless garden-fresh veggies at home all around the country.
